Jazz Artist of the Week
Louis Armstrong - Hot Fives and Hot Sevens
Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Hot Sevens were recorded between 1925 and 1928. They were some of the most influential recordings in the history of jazz. These recordings helped to transform jazz into what it is today. His playing (solos in particular) codified many elements of jazz including phrasing, articulation and most importantly - SWING. These recordings help move jazz from a collective musical artform toward one of individual expression and improvisation. Listen carefully to the difference between Louis Armstrong's playing and the other musicians on the recording. Musicians today still strive for this kind of sound, creativity and inventive musical ideas.
