Jazz Artist of the Week
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
"Kind of Blue" has been regarded by many jazz critics as jazz's greatest record and one of the greatest records of all time. It also happens to be the best selling jazz record of all time as well. The album features Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Paul Chambers on bass, Bill Evans on piano on all tracks except "Freddie Freeloader", Wynton Kelly on piano on "Freddie Freeloader," and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The compositions are a departure from Miles's previous hard bop style. The chord changes are much slower and use musical modes instead of major or minor keys. The resulting improvisations are melodic, creative and freed from the often formulaic "licks" that jazz musicians would play over difficult chord progressions. Bottom line...if you don't have "Kind of Blue" in your jazz record collection, you don't have a jazz record collection!
